The Belgian MAG 58 (Mitrailleuses D'Appui General) is a belt-fed
and gas operated GPMG (General Purpose Machine Gun) which fires
from the open bolt position. The gas system allows cyclic rates
from 650 to 1,100 rounds per minute to be adjusted according
to requirements. The MAG 58 was adopted by the U.S. Military
in 1976 after extensive testing and comparison with other GPMGs
and was named the M240.
This machinegun has a MRBF (Mean Rounds Between Failure) of
over 26,000 rounds, making it by far the most reliable machine
gun. There are many different configurations of this machinegun
currently in use throughout the U.S. and other militaries. Further
reading on this machinegun can be found at the Mag
58 information page and the Marine
Corps M240 info page.
