The .22 rimfire
First used in 1890 in the Winchester Model
1890 rifle this is a
venerable and popular small-arms caliber. Unlike all the other calibers
discussed on these pages, the .22 cartridge is a rimfire instead
of a center fire. The method of construction is quite different as
there is no separate primer in the center of the cartridge and thus
this bullet cannot be reloaded. There are different variations of
the .22 rimfire bullet available for different firearms and applications,
ranging from very small loads for plinking to larger and heavier
loads for hunting. Not all of these bullets are interchangeable in
firearms that are marked as ".22", so one must choose the
ammunition with care. In all variations, the .22 rimfire remains
a relatively low-powered and low-pressured round. The .22 still stands
as a very inexpensive and accurate round to shoot with almost no
recoil at all.
